Return from hiatus rant

Liberal, Conservative.
Socialist, Capitalist.
Democrat, Republican.

None of these labels really matter when it comes to where one stands on America. You may favor more social programs, or none at all. You may be for gay marriage, you may be against it. Regardless of where you stand on many of the so called hot button issues, you can still love America. You can love America for what she is. You can love America for all of her potential. This love can be critical or or it can be blind (although I prefer the more critical variety). But this love of my country and society, it is what forced me to leave the Left. While it is en vogue to say that they left me, that would not be fully accurate. To be sure, the Democrat party have moved steadily to the left; this progression (and I chose that word for a reason) did indeed leave me behind, once I opened my eyes, ears and mind and began to look at what the Left said and what the Left did, I found that I was also moving to the right. Now, years later, I am very much a part of the Right.
Now, before I have the inevitable knee jerk attack for saying that lefties/liberals don't love America (country, society, history or what have you), that is not what I am saying. You can be on the left of things, on many or even all issues, and still love this nation. You can still believe that America is truly exceptional in many ways, despite her many flaws.
That said, when you look at the vocal members of the Left, it is hard to see anything but negativity. They are not all negative about the same things, lets be sure about this. The vocal Left is an odd mishmash of toxic negativity. Just go to any of the so-called anti-war rallies. Look at the motivating groups, like International ANSWER. These people are not anti-war. They are anti-America. Look back, down the years, and you'll see that many of the movers and shakers in the 'anti-war' crowd were just fine with Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, fine with the Sandinistas, Hussein's campaigns against his neighbors and subjects and a host of other terrible events and regimes. What they oppose is any American action other than capitulation.
Now, add in another fun crowd, the Bush Haters. These are the people, for what ever reason, so hate GWB that anything that hurts him is a good thing. No lie is too large, too vile, so long as it may hurt the president they so loathe. If it may hurt Bush, they cheer it on, even pray for it. If it also happens to hurt America, well, it is a small price to pay. Now, to be clear, I don't think opposition to the President or his policies are treasonous in and of itself. How one expresses and acts upon the oppostion might be, however. Calling the Plame/Novak/Libby/Wilson affair a breach of national defense and calling for investigations and convictions is fine. So long as you also take the same posistion when information about holding facilities in eastern Europe are leaked, or when a former presidential advisor is caught stealing and destroying classified documents before he and his administration are investigated. When you are willing to hurt America abroad, weaken the nation in the long run for the short term gain of deposing a president that can only be around for a few years anyway, you've crossed a line.
In short, if the only thing that matters to you is "how will this help/hurt Bush?", and you act on it accordingly, you're lost in a form of destructive madness. This also applies to the Right, but from where I stand, it is less of a problem over there. Partially because, despite the claims of the Left, dissent is allowed on the Right. It may not always be welcome and celebrated, but it is tolerated and more often than not, encouraged. Witness John McCain and Zel Miller. Both iconoclasts that are willing to speak against the party leadership when they disagree. Which one has been greeted with proverbial torches and pitchforks more often, and with more intensity?
One of the reasons I left the Left, and took stock of where they were heading and where I stood, was their treatment of opposing points of view. Ask any minority or female conservative, and you'll get a crash course in the intolerance of the Left. Now, I am not saying the Right is a big loving come one, come all affair. But the Right has never claimed to be one. The big tent notion of the Right has always maintained that if you are with them on core issues, there is room enough in the tent to disagree on the smaller things. Not so with the Left. Ask Ron Silver. Often times, anything less than full agreement with the Left is seen as opposition or worse, betrayal. When I voiced concern that abortion was too often seen as a form of birth control, no better or worse than any other... that was the begining of the end. Expressing concern that abortion on demand, without concern, may be bad for society, this was heresy to my fellows on the Left and in the Democrat party. And it just went down hill from there... I learned a hard lesson, that those who preached tolerance and concern as core values, above others, were very intolerant of differing opinions. In fact, as soon as I expressed that I though abortion was un healthy, and should be discouraged in favor of other options (Norplant, oral contraceptives, condoms) and used as a fail safe when they failed or when the mother's health was in jeopardy... I was labeled as an enemy. That I thought abortion should be safe and legal didn't matter; only that I objected to abortions on demand, for any reason. It wasn't long before the buzz words came out... patriachy, sexist, oppressor and of course, the Lefts favorite, facist.
Back to the "anti-war" crowd. Look around one of these loony rallies. When did "my enemy's enemy is my friend" become strategy, not tactics, for these folks? Where else will you find anarchists, folks worshipping Che, anti-semites, socialists and a whole host of conspiracy theorists and nuts, all united together. Let's make no mistake either, in assuming that these people are all anti-America. Many of them are, however, and the destroy Bush ant any cost crowd has been making common cause with them. Years ago, the legitimate Left and the Democrat party distanced themselves from these people. But now, they court them. They encourage them. They feed off their energy and have embraced them as their base. For some in the Democrat party, I think they have always been in this camp, but were either in the closet about it, or just generally ignored. But now, the Howard Dean wing of the party is the party. And it saddens me. I don't want a parliemtry dozen party system, like much of Europe and other democracies, but I see the Democrat marching down a path of self destruction, a vision of negativity, where they define themselves by what they oppose and all who don't agree are anathema, and I think we may need another viable political party. (I don't favor the European model, if only because the governing coalitions that are created are rarely strong or good for the common man, IMO. They are often weak, corrupt, and share no vision beyond a tenuous alliance to stay in control; the very definition of "politics makes strange bedfellows")
What brings this on today? For one, listening to Ramsey Clark, as he takes up the mantle as Saddam's defense lawyer. He's not anti-war. He is rooting for the other side. And he is no longer on the fringe of the Left and the Democrats. He is at the core, and any oppostion is shouted down, forced to sit down or get off the bus. The truly sad thing is, the pary is losing elections (and no, holding onto the governors' mansions in NJ and VA are not great victories signalling a come back) in no small part because of this position of opposition. And the opposition is more often than not nothing but opposition. They are against it simply because Bush is for it, or because it could help Bush somehow. Until sanity returns, or the saner members of the Democrat party takes control and tells the children to behave or leave to form their own party, I only see defeat and marginalization in the Democrat's future. And I don't want that to happen. A strong, vocal and effective Democrat party keeps the Republicans on their toes, and forces them to meet their obligations. A weak and insane coalition of negativity does not.
Well, that is all for now. Rant done.

Open Thread for Phil

In the same vein as the Open Thread for Actus, here's an open thread for PhilM, and angry fellow who likes to troll at Brian Malloney's Radioequalizer blog.
He likes to call names, change the subject and throw tantrums.
After tossing out the label coward when I failed to give him the specific answer he wanted, I've invited him to come on down.
Please treat him with the courtesy expected around here, not the courtesy he is known to display.
I am looking at you, MonkeyBoner. :)

Dean: We need a message!

Link: Dean Says Democrats Must Take Offensive - Yahoo! News.

"What the propagandists on the right have done is make people afraid to say they are Democrats," Dean told a gathering of Vermont Democrats. "We have to be out there. We have to be vocal. We have to be pushing our version of the facts because their version of the facts is very unfactual."

So, I guess the right's constant quoting of Dean is scaring people off... and Howling Howard's response to this?  KICK. IT. UP.  His PA system has an 11 on the dial, and he intends to use it!
In Howard's world, losing elections, being associated with hare-brained comments and being aligned with malodorous characters isn't what is hurting his party... it is all right wing propaganda!
I also find Howard's definition of fact to be intriguing ;)

Dean_bong_gun_1

The article goes on to say:

After visiting 30 states in the first six months as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Dean said Monday he has found "There are Democrats everywhere."

One needs an advanced degree, say in medicine, to notice this?  News flash Dr. Dean, you can also find rats and cockroaches everywhere too.
No, no I could not resist the cheap shot.  I'm feeling Mithrastic today.  Must be a Philly thing.

PS, while I am being snarky, the word is nonfactual, not unfactual.  Howard can't even point to a public school edumacashun for that one.

With tolerance, just us, for all

Over at the Huffington Post, Michael Schmerconish (author of Flying Blind, radio host in Philadelphia, PA and frequent talking head on C-Span and CNN) wrote up his (addmitted) slow pitch softball interview with Rummy.

The article itself ain't bad.  But read the comments.  It shows that HP is really little more than Kos (on a good day) or the DU (on a bad day, like when a certain sports reporter posts) with a PR department and vapid celeberties rubbing elboes with progrssive politicians and professional leftists.

One of my favorites, from a 'mr. smith'

First of all, Michael, you shouldn't be on this blog. This is for progressives and the "reality-based" community, and your thoughts will probably not be tolerated here.

If you read his post though, it is clear that he is mostly defending Michael, but the subsequent posters don't seem to pick up on that, for the most part.

Most of the posters decide to compare the author to Joe Stalin or other wise impugn the author, but few post anything of substance to refute the article itself.

Another favorite come from Lonestar Liberal:

Two centuries of American moral leadership, even with faults, has been undone in less than two terms

I have to wonder what his thoughts on the WJC and Reagan administrations were at the time, and what they are now. :)

However, two posters, one a leftie, the other a righty, have a fairly civil and reasoned debate.  Liam and Paul from Mpls.  Paul has blog, looks interesting.  Would send him a track back, but he doesn't support them.  Such is life, eh?

The Real 180?

Well, it looks like maybe John F'n Kerry finally released his SF 180, or so the boys at Powerline think.

Check it out.

Another Dem. who gets it

Second time to day, I encounter a liberal who smells the coffee :)  (Remind me sometime to blog about the beauty that is my french press travel mug)

A coworker sent me this link this morning.  VAs Democrat Govenor shares his feeling with the LA Times, about the direction and tone of the party.

This sums up the feeling quite a few people I know have, regarding the attitude of the liberal elite: (all emphasis mine)

Warner — who is thought to have presidential potential because of his bipartisan accomplishments as a governor in the South — said that his party's positioning on social issues had left rural and small-town voters with a "sense of some Democrats' belittling their lives, their culture and their values."

He said he experienced that sentiment during a trip to California, where he felt that some people were condescending because he came from Virginia.

" 'You little Virginia Democrat, how can you understand the great opportunities we have?' " Warner said in characterizing the attitude he encountered. "I came out saying, 'That's why America hates Democrats.' "

This attitude, that is now rubbing even movers and shakers in the party, was one of the things that I chafed under and led to my leaving the Democrat party back in 96.

When a viable potential presidential candidate feels the contempt that radiates out of the coastal movers and shakers, it is time to do some soul searching.  And for the record, I want the Democrats to remain a viable party, and a force to be reckoned with.  The last thing I want is for the Republicans to own American politics.  But without a credible opposition party, they will devolve into something I could no longer stand besides.  Perhaps something as bad as the moonbat wing of the Democrat party already paints them to be.  Or something worse still.

More hate and violence from the side of tolerance and peace

Heard about his one at my vet's office this afternoon:
Peace Activist Slugs Disabled Troop Supporter
Luckily, this is Missouri we're talking about here.  Real men still exist down there, so I have confidence that this little punk will get his due.
So, anyway, this matches up with my own experiences.  I remember back in October, taking the train to work.  I was wearing a Bush campaign hat, possibly a mistake in true blue Philadelphia.  So, while transferring from the NJ-Philly train to the Philly subway, a pack of young college aged hippes decided to block my way.  They were decked out in anti-Bush shirts, and chanting anti-Bush slogans, and screaming at people passing by "Vote Kerry, Bush is scary!".
So, I move to the side to pass them by.  One moves to block.  I move again, so does he.  I ask him "Would you mind?", his response was to call me a fascist and spit at me.  So, I move forward, to should him aside.  He balls his fists and companion moves in to flank me.  Then another friend pulls the first child of peace aside by the collar.  She noticed what was in my hand as soon as he spit on me... my nail trimmer.  Of course, these little punks then ran to the police as I walked to the platform.  When an officer caught up with me, he asked me if I had a knife, and if I was threatening the hippies.
I produced 2 Leatherman tools (one micro, one wave), and my Gerber.  And my mace.  And showed him the remains of the spit on my hat.  The officer saw nothing wrong with a man triming his cuticles and nails while waiting for a train.  And was glad that the spitting finally gave him the excuse to kick the kiddies out of the station.
Tangent: my lefty coworkers and friends said I was asking for it... wearing a Bush campaing hat for all to see.  Now, if I were a woman and wearing a short skirt and revealing top... well, I don't think they'd sing the same tune!

Anyway, why is it that elements of the left are so willing to engage in violence or threatening behaivor when confronted with people who disagree with them?

And a challenge.  Anyone have documented stories of conservative/righties pulling stunts like this?
I am guessing that for every one we find, we'll find 3+ examples of dems behaving badly.

Lefty Bumper Stickers

So, while my commute each morning is relatively short (11 miles), it often takes 20 to 40 minutes to complete.  Most of this time is spent sitting on a 6 mile stretch of Pennsylvania’s fabled Schuylkill Expressway.  That’s pronounced Shkool-kill, for the uninitiated.  Also called the Sure Kill Expressway, localy.

Anyway, given the high number of crashes and even higher number of people in PA who cannot grasp the concepts of merging, yielding or turn signals, I am left with a lot of time to read the passing bumper stickers and window art.  As you may know, Philly is a very democrat town.  Very pro-union.  Along with Pittsburgh, Philly’s voting bloc sends the state into the blue category in most presidential elections, and is home to everyones favorite RINO senator, Arlen Spector.

But I digress.

So, taken from my commute and the parking lot behind my office, here are my favorite moonbat, leftist and WTF?!? Bumber stickers from this past week.

Click on More for, well, more:

Hinchy v Hannity

GANNON DID IT!!!! or so says Maurice Hinchey, the 22nd district congresscritter.
Congressman Hinchey (D-NY) was just on Hannity.
Hannity asked what the proof was that Karl Rove planted the fake TANG memos.
Hinchey's response?  IT WAS JEFF GANNON!
I'd love a transcript, but the Moonbat Congressman from NY just keeps going down the conspiracy theories, and when pressed for actual proof, just tells Sean that he's (Hannity) isn't man enough to hear the truth!
Now Hannity is just letting him talk and talk, all the while Hinchey doesn't realize he's not on the air. He's not listening to Sean, he's just talking down the script.
Now he says Hannity is part of the conspiracy...
Hannity promises a reel on this in the future.
